Is dancing a sport? We think so

ree

Let me tell you a little story.

It’s Monday evening. You’ve just finished work or school. The Dublin city centre is buzzing, and as you walk into the Harbourmaster Bar & Restaurant, you hear the beat of Latin music floating in the air. Upstairs, people are moving, laughing, dancing. You’re now inside the world of Dublin Salsa Academy, and tonight’s class is all about movement, rhythm, and joy.

But wait a minute — is this just fun? Or is it something more?

Dance: Art or Sport?

People often ask, “Is dancing a sport?” And honestly, it’s a great question.

At first glance, dancing looks like pure art — graceful, expressive, and full of emotion. But come to one of our Salsa or Bachata classes, and you'll notice something else: sweat, fast heartbeats, tired legs, and a workout that rivals any gym session. Sounds like sport, doesn’t it?

And it’s not just any dancing — we’re talking Cuban Salsa, Sensual Bachata, and Line Salsa style. These styles aren’t just beautiful to watch, they’re physically demanding and challenging too. You need coordination, speed, balance, and strength. You’re learning timing, memorizing steps, and staying in sync with a partner — all while smiling!

That takes real athletic skill.

What Science Says

Believe it or not, scientific studies have shown that high-level dancers, especially those in competitive settings, experience the same physical exertion as Olympic runners during short races. Yes, really. Things like heart rate, lactic acid buildup, and oxygen levels are just as intense in a 90-second salsa routine as they are in an 800-meter sprint.

So yeah — dance is serious business.

And while some people might still think of sports as only football or athletics, the truth is that dance ticks all the boxes of a sport. It's competitive, physically challenging, and requires training, discipline, and skill. Just like any athlete, dancers push their bodies and minds to the limit.

But It’s Still Art

At the same time, we can't forget that dancing is deeply artistic. It’s about expressing feelings, telling stories with your body, and connecting with music. In our beginner dance classes, we often say, “Don’t just do the steps — feel the music.”

It’s this unique mix of art and athleticism that makes dancing so magical.

You might come for fitness, but you stay for the feeling. The connection. The moment when you and your partner hit the perfect step together, and the whole room feels it. That’s what dancing does.

Dance Builds More Than Muscles

When you join the dance community in Dublin, especially at Dublin Salsa Academy, you’re not just learning salsa or bachata — you’re meeting people, making friends, and becoming part of something bigger.

We’ve seen total beginners walk in shy and nervous, and within weeks, they’re laughing, spinning, and leading others on the dance floor. It’s not just about moving your feet — it’s about building confidence, happiness, and community.

And isn’t that the true spirit of sport? Pushing yourself, learning new things, and connecting with others through shared effort?

Why We Love What We Do

At Dublin Salsa Academy, we’re proud to offer classes every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. We’re located right in the heart of the city, in a friendly and welcoming venue. Whether you're into the smooth movements of Sensual Bachata, the energy of Cuban Salsa, or the rhythm of Line Salsa Style, we’ve got something for everyone — especially beginners!

You don’t need to be “fit” or “athletic” to start. You just need to show up and try. That’s how every journey begins.

So… Is Dance a Sport?

Our answer? Yes — and so much more.

Dance is art in motion. It’s sport with soul. It’s a place where passion meets performance, and where anyone, at any age or fitness level, can grow.

So next time someone says, “Isn’t dance just fun?” — smile and say, “Absolutely. It’s fun and it’s a sport.”

And then invite them to class. 😉

Want to try it for yourself?Join us at Dublin Salsa Academy, upstairs at Harbourmaster Bar & Restaurant, Dublin 1.Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings — beginners are always welcome.
